First of all, I would like to you welcome in the literary world. Being capable of expressing feelings in the form of words is itself an achievement. Here, at WordCurd we would like to express your feelings and experience as a writer, reader and as a human.
And now as you have entered this world, how do you feel being a member of it?
Being a part of the literary world is so much of an opportunity that I feel both happy and excited about it. This is a chance to relate to thousands of people and make a connection with at least a few of them.
What made you think your book is different from others? What makes your book special that the reader should pick it?
I feel that many a time people are apprehensive to pick up a book of poems. They feel that poetry is more difficult so to speak, than prose. My poems are honest. And they have something in them for everyone. Both a layman and someone who loves poetry.
While writing this book what were your expectations from the book? Were you sure that this book could give wings to your writing career?
Writing poetry has been a hobby since childhood. And every poem of mine is spontaneous. While bringing out this collection I wanted to come up with a collection of poems that truly captures my experience of life as girl growing up in India to the woman that I’m today. And I wanted to write that in a way my generation can relate to and understand. Because I feel that there in an increasing inclination towards prose and poetry is largely forgotten or sidelined. And as for the wings, I certainly hope so.
What do you think of writing as a career? What importance does literature plays in your life?
I think it is a brilliant idea. And a blessing that only a few can get. Because it is the kind of career that really helps you leave you mark behind. Say, 200 years from now, I’m pretty sure people will know Rowling and Tolkien. Just like Shakespeare has always been around. And Tagore and Goethe and everyone in that league. Having said that, I don’t think writing can always be a profession that can sustain you, especially if you are writing poetry. Besides, making it a full time thing I feel, would take the joy out of it. Life is the fuel for literature. Meaningful life helps one write meaningful things. And it works the other way around as well. Meaningful literature helps one appreciate the million tiny beautiful things in life.
What according to you is the best way to connect to readers? Words shooting from heart, an extraordinary story or something else?
The best way to connect to readers I feel is to be honest in your writing. To avoid linguistic bombast and there by making it a forum to showcase your command on the language. I believe that the key to good literature is simplicity of the language and the grandness of the ideas that it conveys.
Now as your debut book arrives in the market, what do you expect from your readers?
I expect them to give the book a chance.
When you were in the initial phase of the writing journey, what obstacles you faced as a debutant author?
For an upcoming writer there is always the difficulty of finding a good publisher who shows faith in your writing. Also you have to counter the tendency to be too self critical at times and not let that affect the natural flow of writing.
What you think is the purpose of your writing? What difference does writing makes to your life?
If not writing, then what?
The purpose of my writing is partly to vent out the piling thoughts in my head and partly to give poetry a new shape. Writing is a huge part of my life. I think it makes life much more easier and enjoyable for me. Even the not so happy or fun part of life. Writing helps you make the most of it. If not writing, then… I don’t know. To me writing is a compulsion. An addiction I hope never to get over.
Does at any stage you feel like leaving the script in the halfway. Who would you like to give the credit of being a constant inspirer?
People I come across, situations I’m put in and Life in general has been the greatest source of inspiration.
Last, but most important question readers would want to know- Are you working on another book? If yes, how different is this from your last work?
I am always writing. So yes. My first book came out when I was 16. I have brought out 3 collections of poems so far and they have seen the evolution of me both as a writer and as a person. I’m positive this growth is bound to reflect in my next collection as well. Besides as I mentioned earlier Life is the fuel, the raw material for literature. So as life moves ahead for a writer, every change in it is bound to reflect on her/his literature.
