1984 : A Love Story by Gurkaran Singh

                                      Episode 2

The first talk

It was not a normal one. It seemed like violins and guitars were playing around him as she took each step towards him. It seemed like flowers will blossom and it would start to rain. But that was not the case and what followed was something un-expectable.

Divya was soon joined by a mighty personality. He was a strong built man standing at around six feet tall. He had huge biceps and he didn’t seem in a good mood. He approached straight towards Rajwinder and in a heavy voice said to him, “Why were you staring at her? Do you know her” Rajwinder was now frightened as hell and was unable to speak a single word. He looked at Divya who was also looking angry. Suddenly Sushant and Avi joined in and solved the matter by saying that he was only talking to them and was not staring at the girl. Rajwinder without making an eye contact with Divya went inside the college to attend their first class in the college.

They took their seats inside the class which was already half full with a lot of excited faces who were looking quite fresh and were quite happy. Avi and Sushant sat together on the second last desk while Rajwinder sat alone on the last desk.

Suddenly Rajwinder saw Divya coming inside the class. What the hell was she doing here, he thought. But as soon as she approached near him the same guitars and violins started to play again. Sushant and Avi were looking at Rajwinder and his expressions. She came to Rajwinder and said sorry to him. ”Sorry,I know my bodyguard is too rude; I am sorry that he frightened you”

She sat next to Rajwinder.

The teacher came and started teaching but Rajwinder did not pay any attention to what he (the teacher) was saying. How can anyone pay attention to an old man when a beautiful girl is sitting next to you? She also did not seem too much interested in hearing that man. She then looked at Rajwinder who pretended to be writing down all the things which the teacher spoke. She said to Rajwinder,”I know that you are just pretending to note all the things but actually you were still staring at me”. Rajwinder replied back, ”when an ice cream loaded with chocolate is present no one even cares to look at the old stuffed gajar ka halwa”. In the same case when a beautiful girl is sitting next to you how can anyone focus on what an old man is saying’

Hearing this answer Divya started laughing. Soon the first lecture ended and Avi and Sushant also joined them and introduced themselves. “Itni baatein ho gayi aur tumne abhi tak apna naam bhi nahin bataya” asked Rajwinder “Divya divya sharma” replied Divya. “Tum log kafi rich ho kya jo bodyguard lekar ghumte ho kya baat hain miss Divya Sharma” asked Avi.“Wo actually mere dad na janakpuri ke bahut bade leader hain to isliye extra protection for me agar kisi ladke ne mujhe tang kiya ya faltu stare kiya to yeh thoda bhadak jata hain” saying this she looked at Rajwinder who was still staring at her.

The first movie

Rajwinder and Divya had become great friends from the day one of the college. They were sometimes joined in by Avi and Sushant but most of the times it was just the two of them. Sushant and Avi used to tease Rajwinder a lot by saying those old famous lines of boys “Ab ladki mil gayi to bhaiyon ko to lagta hai bhul hi gaya tu”. Both Rajwinder and Divya used to spend most of their time in college only because outside the college her black beauty [her body guard] waited for her. Finally her father decided not to send a bodyguard with her to the college in order to make her more independent. Divya was very happy with that decision.

That day a new movie “ek dujhe ke liye” had released. Divya wanted to see that movie so he asked Rajwinder to go with him. Wo jo bahar black beauty khada hai agar usko pata lag gaya to usne mujhe bahut marna hain” said Rajwinder . “That black beauty will now be taking care of those who mess up with my dad. I am a free bird now and we are going for the movie without any ifs or buts” said Divya in a naughty tone. “Aur wahan jake hum ek dujhe ke liye ho jayenge kya” said Rajwinder “Should I call for the black beauty? If my dad gets to know about all this, he will trap me inside the house” said divya “but unko batana kis ne hain, chal aaj dekh hi lete hain ek dujhe ke liye”

They took an auto from their college to go to Regal Cinema located in Connaught Place. They had to reach the college half an hour before Divya’s driver came back to the college to pick her up. In the auto they held hands as the auto rushed towards the busy roads of Delhi. Finally they reached the cinema hall, where Rajwinder bought tickets and soon they were inside the theatre watching the movie. It was a movie about Inter-caste love and was quite an emotional one and Rajwinder actually slept through the movie only to be woken up by Divya’s elbow. Divya cried for at least an hour watching the intense love between Rati Agnihotri and Kamala Hassan. But Rajwinder was not interested in watching love stories. After watching the movie, they both came out hand in hand with each other and took and auto for the college.
