Interview with Author Preeti Singh

First of all, I would like to welcome you in the Literary World. Being capable of expressing feelings in the form of words is itself an achievement. Here, at WordCurd we would like you to express your feelings and experience as a writer, reader and as a human.

1.    And now as you have entered this world, how do you feel being a member of it?

Privileged and humbled.

2.    What made you think that your book is different from others? What makes your book special that reader should pick it?

One can’t force anyone to pick up our books but we authors, pen our words from our life experiences and how we perceive the world. CROSSROADS is one book which I feel every Indian woman can relate to…the struggles, the pain and the love life a woman is depicted in a woman’s journey from a young bride to motherhood.

3.    While writing this book what were your expectations from the book? Were you sure that this book could give wings to your writing career?

No expectations really…but yes an ardent urge to make sure it reaches almost every woman. As a result of its success, the readers demanded it to be translated in Hindi…thus it reached a further audience.

4.    What do you think of writing as a career? What importance does literature plays in your life?

Like most writers, I too walk..talk and sleep with words J But taking it up as a career is not what I would like to do…as we writers are bound by our moods to scribble when we feel like and not when a job timing demands it. We like to be set free when expressing ourselves and only then the best emerges from us. But it depends from person to person…writer to writer and if they can channelize their moods and make it a suitable profession, why not ?

5.    What according to you is the best way to connect to the readers? Words shooting from heart, an extraordinary story or something else?

Both. If you write from your heart, in a simple language and you can make even one reader smile, feel, laugh or cry, you have just written a best seller. More than the writing, you need to have the ability and network to market your books so it can reach most readers and their feedback will help you evolve into a better writer.

6.    Now as your debut book arrives in the market, what do you expect from your readers?

An honest feedback…negative or positive so one can improvise our writing and work towards our imperfections for the next book.

7.    When you were in the initial phase of the writing journey, what obstacles you faced as a debutant author?

Being new in this industry in 2011, I was running confused from door to door wondering how to get my debut novel Flirting With Fate published. Many people helped and yet, many stabbed me in the back, misleading a novice. But with time one learns and today I always try to help newcomers as they don’t suffer the way I did. It was not easy but not impossible, either.

8.    What do you think is the purpose of your writing? What difference does writing makes to your life?
If not writing, then what?

Writing helps me unwind after a stressful day and releases those feelings of love, fear, angst etc which perhaps in real life one cannot express easily. It’s a catharsis of the soul. If am not writing, am listening to music, exercising, meeting friends or playing with my dog, who is a vital character in all my books J

9.    Does at any stage you feel like leaving the script in the halfway. Who would you like to give the credit of being a constant supporter?

We all face the writer’s block when we just don’t feel like writing for days on end. At times we forget to bathe, eat, sleep and the fire is burning within to take out the words and at times we just cannot write even a single word. But my motivation to come back and scribble again is when I get any review by the readers of my previous books.

10. What do you usually prefer-pen, typewriter or computer?
My handwriting is lousy…lol…so of course the laptop J

11. What are the core qualities an author must possess?

Be simple in using your words. You need to write to express not to impress your readers. And most importantly, if you do not feel the emotions while writing, you cannot expect the readers to feel it too, when they are reading.

12. Every journey teaches us a lesson. What are the lessons you’ve learnt while penning your books?
Nothing is impossible. If you are determined to reach somewhere, you can if you remain persistent and dedicated. My journey has taught me to be honest and help everyone you come across and somewhere the cosmos returns the goodness to you.

13. Tell us about your latest book.
The latest, the 3rd one is still being penned…you will have to wait for this one…all I can say is..its a thriller !

14. Does anyone else write in your family or anyone who loves books?
Yes, my father writes for newspapers but no one, except me, has penned a novel yet. I hope someone does soon and I am now here to help them J Most of my family members are avid readers and my daughter is my most strict critic as she reads and helps me correct my script first.

15. Tell us about the best compliment you’ve ever received and the criticism given to you as an author.
Best compliment always has been that I write in a simple language which anyone can relate to. Best criticism has been that at times I write totally unreal stuff without verifying facts. I shall be working on perfecting that now onwards.

16. How much your stories are influenced from real-life stories?
Just written 2 books yet. Only CROSSROADS is based on a real life story.

17. These days every author wants to come in the list of ‘Best-selling Authors’? What do you think about it?
I am quite content with the little acclaim I have gathered. I do not need the ‘Best Seller ‘tag if I have managed to touch the heart of even one reader. I am happy and feel I am already home..I don’t need the cut throat competition. Each book, each author has its own readership.

18. Tell us something about your five year goal. Where do you see yourself as  a writer in five years?
I don’t see so far ahead dear. Next 5 days I may not live…taking each day as it comes…kal ho na ho J Moreover, I have no goals in life..am just happy in the NOW.

19. If given an opportunity, would you like to be a full-time writer?
I am a full time writer and a full time single mom so hands full J

20. How much time do you take to complete a novel? Is ‘patience’ the keyword to become a successful author?
My debut took me time as I was new in the field but the 2nd one was quick to end. But I confess, I am a lazy author…am in no hurry to outdo the rest and spin books…I write when am comfy and feel like. Yes, one needs patience definitely and of course prayers too.

21. What is the motive of your writing? Does your work fall under some special category?
No motive. No category. Just being me J

22. Last, but most important question readers would want to know- Are you working on another book? If yes, how different is this from your last work?
Yes…working on my 3rd book. It’s a thriller so let’s see how it turns out to be and if I can leave a chill down the spine of my readers.

Thank you for sparing your precious time!
We hope you enjoyed the session.
