A Narrow Escape by Will Mayo

It's worth noting in passing to tell the tale of several years ago when I went to see an oral surgeon to have a root canal performed on a back tooth. "A root canal?" you say. "Surely there's not much to tell in a tale such as that." And, in many ways, there's not. I was let in to the dental chair with no delay, the doctor was kind, the whole procedure went over flawlessly, and everything went according to plan in the humdrum order of things....with one minor exception. That is, to note that several hours after I departed from the operation during the following night the brakes gave out on a parked car in a parking lot up the hill from the building where the surgeon's office was located, the car then rolled rapidly down the slope, jumped the curb, and smashed right into the office where I'd been previously, then commenced to roar, smashing and crashing, through the walls and several thousands of dollars worth of surgical equipment before coming to rest comfortably in another parking lot down the way from the building where the doctor and I had been earlier. As all this took place after hours no one was hurt but for a few hours difference, however, my life and any number of others would have been lost. It makes you wonder.
