The Tunnel of Love Part 6 by Gurkaran Singh

Tunnel of Love

FINALLY SHE IS DISCHARGED

“She is physically fine now, you can take her home now, but she is still hurt mentally, try to keep her as happy as you can. Avoid talking about the incident especially in front of her” was the advice of the doctor which he gave to Jasmine’s parents and Ayush.

Since Jasmine was constantly asking about the whereabouts of Yuvi and his family, so her parents had to tell her why and how her marriage was called off. This actually broke Jasmine. Then, the police came to record her statement and because of her statement the accused was given a five day police remand.

Ayush decided to leave his internship so that he could spend most of his time with Jasmine. He told his parents about his decision. They supported his decision, especially his dad, who said, “Beta!! I always wanted to do something in my life, something on which I can always be proud of, but life did not gave me that opportunity. Today, I am so proud of you, I am so proud that I am your father. Go and help your friend, she needs you the most at this juncture of her life”

Ayush used to spend most of his time with Jasmine. He gave her courage to face the situation. He used to compose poems for her so that she get courage to face this world. He made Jasmine edit his works and articles so that she just forget everything and concentrate on editing his works.

One day, they were sitting at Jasmine’s home, “So, the college is reopening on 20th July, excited to go back to College”? asked Ayush. “Yaar, how will I face the world? Everybody will ask me many questions, will pass various comments. I do not want to embarrass myself, my family, you and Karanvir, so I have decided to continue my studies through Correspondence only. In that case, I would not have to face the world every day and will have to face them only during exam days” said Jasmine.

Ayush asked her, “From which day did Jasmine Kaur started caring about what others think or say about her? Stop worrying about the people, Jasmine, it’s your life and live it on your own terms and conditions. First, because of your family, you decided to marry even before completing your graduation, and now since you are not sure how people will react, you will not go to college. Do something which you want to do. Still if you do not want to go to College, fine, I will also not go. When you bring your correspondence form, bring one for me too. Jahan bhi jayenge ikathey hi jayenge, now it’s up to you where do you want to go; either to SGND or the Examination center which the School of Open Learning allots”, said Ayush.

Jasmine asked him, “Why are you doing all this? Because of me, you left your Internship, did every possible thing to make me happy and now keeping your career at stake for a loser like me. Why Ayush why?” This was the perfect time when Ayush could have proposed Jasmine, but may be this was not the appropriate moment for it. Ayush told her, “Yaar, you remember that on last Valentine’s Day I promised you that whatsoever the situation is, I will never leave your hand, aur yaar hum writer log hain, vaade se nahi mukarte.” Jasmine playfully threw a pillow at Ayush and said, “Aaya vadda writer and threw a pillow directly towards him and both of them fought with pillows and shared loads of laughter together.

THE REVOLUTION

College was to reopen after ten days. Jasmine decided to continue at SGND only. But she was still tensed about how other students will react after seeing her. It was very well known in the college that she was supposed to get married and most of them will be expecting her in a Chura.

Ayush very well knew of this hesitation of her and talked to Karanvir about this situation. He asked him if anything could be done about asked if anything could be done about this situation. Karanvir said him, “Let me think bro! Oh yes, there is a way out. Our college has started a confession page on Facebook; why don’t we share her story there; maybe we can change the mindset of the students studying in our college. To top it all, the identity in these pages is hidden and Jasmine would never be able to know who initially posted her story. Ayush liked and therefore agreed to the proposal. He opened the College’s Confession page on Facebook and posted Jasmine’s story on it.

Ayush gave it the title as “The bravest girl of SGND” and wrote in detail about everything Jasmine suffered, right from slapping the boy who used to stalk her, then how she was supposed to get married and how the accused threw acid on Jasmine’s face in order to teach her a lesson. Then, how her fiancée decided not to marry her after the acid attack and how she finally decided to continue with her studies. At the end, he wrote, all those who stand with her shall come to the college gate to welcome her.

Soon the message was circulated on various social networking sites. Soon a #I stand with the brave SGND Girl was started. Many people pledged their support to the brave girl. Jasmine was shocked seeing her story on the social networking sites. She looked to check out who had put this story on Facebook. She knew that it would be Ayush only, but was not 100% sure.

SOON A REVOLUTION WAS IGNITED

When Jasmine came to the college gate, she was welcomed by numerous students. Many of the students gathered around her and congratulated her for the courage she has shown and that they all stand with her.

Jasmine got so emotional and her eyes got filled with tears seeing how students pledged their support to her. The College President and General Secretary also came to receive her and pledged their support to her. Some students asked Jasmine to speak few words. And what followed was the most remarkable speech ever given by anyone at SGND.

“Well!! First of all, a big thank you to all of you for pledging your unconditional support to me. I may fumble a few words since I was unaware of all this and I have not prepared any speech. But, yes, there are a few things which I definitely want to share.

I slapped a boy who used to stalk me in the public and he threw acid at me. The police has arrested him and the court will definitely give him the punishment he deserve; I have full faith on the judiciary system. But, what about the so-called, “my would-be” husband who once told me that he will always stand by me, whatsoever the situation is. And when I needed him the most, he instead of standing with me, decided to call off the marriage.

The stalker attacked me a day before I was supposed to get married. And the most shocking part was the behavior of my fiancée’s parents, they even questioned my character. They are those category of parents who will never ask their boy who comes at 12 at night, but will definitely ask thousands questions if their girl comes at 9’o clock. Numerous questions like, “Kahan thi tu, kiske sath thi tu, phone kyu nahin kiya pohnch ke, etc. etc.  Every boy wants to talk to a girl at night but would not allow his sister to talk to any boy at night. Why this discrimination? Why? The only hope rests with us. We need to understand that doordarshan generation can give us fine suggestions but we the YouTube generation need to take our own decisions. And, at last I want to thank Ayush, my best friend who helped me in those crisis situation”. Saying this, Jasmine kneeled down on her knees and said “Ayush, tu toh yaar bolega nahi, Lagta hai ladki ko hi bolna padega!!!

“Tussi hasde ho saanu Hasaan vaaste, tussi ronde yo saanu rovaan vaaste, Ik vaar rus ke ta vekho sohneyo, marr jaavange tuhanu manaan vaaste”.

“Jo asar hai akh di maar andar, oh na teer te na talwar andar, oh nu rab nu labh ki lena hai, jisne labh leya teri akh andar”

Ayush was shocked and happy at the same time. He was called on the stage. Seeing his reactions, Jasmine told him, “What do you think only you can give surprises to me. Hum ladkiyan kisi se kam hain kya. Jaldi bol haan ya naa, mere ghutne dard hone lage hain”.

Ayush said “YES” and the whole college was thrilled at his reply.

Though there were various ups and downs, twists and turns, but finally their love story was blossomed.

In the end, I would like to say one thing which is, “Revolution cannot be brought by holding candles and doing rallies at India Gate. It can be and will be brought by changing the mindset of people, the way, Ayush and Jasmine did.
